Pakistani singer Atif Aslam has responded to criticism over his decision to perform live just a day after his father’s passing. In an interview with Canadian journalist Faridoon Shehryar, Atif addressed the backlash he faced following his Independence Day concert on August 13, 2025, which took place a day after his father, Muhammad Aslam, passed away.
Atif expressed his frustration with the public’s judgment, stating, “I become a rebel when I see people talking like, ‘Oh, this happened to him or he just had a death in his family, and yet he is performing live the very next day.'” He emphasized that such criticism was driven by media outlets seeking content at the expense of his personal loss. “At the expense of something bad that happened at my home, people are running their channels and discussing how I should or shouldnβt have performed,” he remarked.
The singer clarified that he does not feel obligated to explain his actions to the public. “My job is not to explain anything to anyone. I canβt build a relationship with everyone and let them tell me what I should do on the basis of what happened in my family,” he added. He concluded by stating, “My job here is to make art; like me for my art, hate me for my music, but donβt tell me what to do.”
Atif’s performance, which was part of a government-organized event, had garnered both praise and criticism. While some admired his dedication to his craft, others questioned his decision to perform so soon after his father’s death. Atif’s candid response highlights the challenges public figures face when balancing personal grief with professional commitments.
