Chinese Mukbang Streamer Dies from Overeating on Stream

Pan Xiaoting, a 24-year-old Chinese mukbang streamer, died from overeating during a live broadcast on July 14. Xiaoting suddenly collapsed and passed away, with an autopsy revealing severe abdominal deformation and a stomach filled with undigested food. The cause of death was determined to be overeating, according to Hankyung.

Xiaoting was known for her extreme eating challenges, often consuming food for up to ten hours without breaks. On one occasion, she ate 22 pounds of food in a series of meals. Her eating habits had previously led to hospitalization for gastric bleeding, but she resumed her mukbang activities the day after being discharged, despite concerns from her fans.

Mukbang, a trend where creators eat large quantities of food on camera, has faced criticism for its health risks. In China, mukbang content is banned under a 2021 anti-food waste law, which imposes fines of 100,000 Chinese yuan (about $15,000 USD) on media platforms for promoting excessive eating. This legislation followed President Xi Jinping’s remarks on the issue of food waste.

The global debate around mukbang continues, with figures like PewDiePie criticizing creators like Nikocado Avocado for promoting obesity through their eating videos. Xiaoting’s death underscores the dangers of extreme mukbang content and the ongoing controversy surrounding this trend.
