Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s health is reportedly worsening, and she may soon require a lung transplant. The 52-year-old royal was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, a chronic lung disease that causes scarring and makes breathing increasingly difficult.
Medical tests conducted this autumn revealed a clear deterioration in her condition. Are Martin Holm, head of respiratory medicine at Oslo University Hospital, said, “We are reaching the point where a lung transplant will be necessary.” However, no final decision has been made about placing the princess on Norway’s transplant waiting list.
Holm added that Princess Mette-Marit’s healthcare team is preparing to ensure that a lung transplant will be possible when needed. The palace confirmed that doctors have begun evaluations for potential lung transplant surgery.
In a recent interview with NRK, the princess admitted her illness had progressed “faster than I’d hoped.” She explained that daily activities and hobbies, including hiking and skiing, have become increasingly difficult. Prince Haakon, her husband, shared that while she appears well in public, he has noticed significant breathlessness and loss of energy.
Pulmonary fibrosis is a progressive disease, meaning symptoms typically worsen over time. A lung transplant can be a critical treatment option for advanced cases, offering the possibility of improved lung function and quality of life.
The Norwegian royal household emphasized that medical teams are closely monitoring her condition and taking all necessary steps to prepare for a potential transplant. Officials noted that the decision to proceed with surgery will depend on her health status and the suitability of a donor lung.
Princess Mette-Marit’s situation has drawn public attention in Norway, with many expressing support and hope for her recovery. If she undergoes a lung transplant, it could significantly improve her breathing and allow her to resume daily activities.
The royal family continues to prioritize her health, working closely with medical experts to ensure she receives timely care.
