The world mourns the passing of Dame Maggie Smith, the esteemed British actress who died at the age of 89. Known for her illustrious career in theatre and film, Smith was a double Oscar winner and one of the few actors to achieve the prestigious “triple crown” of an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony.

Smith’s remarkable journey in acting began on stage in the 1950s, but she captured the hearts of a younger generation as Professor McGonagall in the beloved Harry Potter film series and as the witty Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey. Her sharp wit and commanding presence made her a standout in every role she took on.

A celebrated stage actress, Smith also captivated audiences with her roles in The Importance of Being Earnest, Three Tall Women, and the dark comedy Gosford Park. In 1990, she was honored with a knighthood by Queen Elizabeth, officially becoming a Dame, solidifying her legacy as one of the UK’s most cherished acting talents.
