Diljit Dosanjh to Indian Govt: ‘Shut liquor Shops, and I'll Stop Singing About Alcohol’

Renowned Indian singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh has stirred a nationwide debate by questioning state governments over their restrictions on songs that promote alcohol.

This controversy arose after the Telangana government prohibited such songs during his concert in Hyderabad. At another event in Ahmedabad, Dosanjh remarked, “Good news, no notice today. I won’t sing songs about alcohol here since Gujarat has a liquor ban.”

He took a firm stance against Telangana’s policy, stating, “You can’t deceive people like this. During the lockdown, everything shut down except liquor stores. If the government truly cares, they should close liquor shops nationwide. If that happens, I’ll stop singing about alcohol.”

Addressing his fans, the Punjabi icon encouraged a nationwide movement to ban alcohol. He also highlighted the double standards, pointing out that while his music faces scrutiny, Bollywood stars openly promote alcohol in ads. “I don’t even drink, yet my songs are targeted, while Bollywood glamorizes alcohol culture,” he said.

Dosanjh criticized the disparity in treatment between local and international artists, hinting that his success could be the reason behind these restrictions. Despite the bans, he assured fans, “Adapting is easy. I’ve sung many great songs, yet people focus on ‘Patiala Peg.’ I’ll adjust, and the love for my music will remain.”

The debate has reignited discussions around censorship, cultural expectations, and the unequal treatment of Indian versus foreign artists, leaving fans and critics eager to see the government’s next move.
