Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor faces SC notice after the Supreme Court of India asked her to respond to Priya Kapur’s petition. The petition seeks certified copies of divorce records between Karisma and the late Sunjay Kapur.
Priya Kapur filed the petition claiming she is the legal heir to Sunjay’s property. She said the records were necessary for ongoing succession proceedings in the Delhi High Court. Karisma, however, called the petition frivolous and an attempt to access her personal information.
During the hearing, Karisma’s lawyer argued that the petition was unnecessary and sought confidential details about her private life. The court has given Karisma two weeks to submit her detailed reply, and she faces SC notice until her statement is provided.
Sunjay Kapur’s sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, also criticized the petition, saying it was a wrong assumption to request the divorce records. She emphasized the matter is sensitive, particularly for the children, and should remain private.
The Supreme Court reviewed the background of the case. The transfer petition, filed by Sunjay in 2016, aimed to move the divorce proceedings from Mumbai Family Court to Delhi. At that time, the case was resolved amicably, and consent terms were recorded in detail.
After Sunjay Kapur passed away on June 12, 2025, Priya Kapur’s lawyer argued that she has a right to access the records concerning her late husband’s legal affairs and estate, citing her marriage to Sunjay on April 3, 2017. Karisma, however, continues to maintain that the request is unnecessary and intrudes on her private life.
The matter has drawn significant media attention, as Karisma Kapoor faces SC notice over the sensitive divorce records. The Supreme Court will review her detailed response before making further decisions on the petition.
The case highlights ongoing legal disputes over personal records, inheritance, and privacy rights in high-profile family matters.
