Malayalam cinema has reached a new milestone with Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra. The film, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, has surpassed Alia Bhatt’s Raazi to become the fourth highest-grossing female-led film in Indian cinema.
Box Office Success
The film has shown remarkable growth since its release. In 21 days, it collected over ₹126 crore net in India and achieved a worldwide gross of ₹257 crore. From the Malayalam market alone, the movie earned around ₹50 crore, marking one of the strongest performances for a regional film.
Its overseas run has also been notable, with collections of ₹111 crore. By comparison, Raazi earned a lifetime domestic net of ₹123.74 crore and a global gross of ₹195.75 crore. With these figures, Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra has set a new box office record, establishing itself as a landmark film.
A First for Malayalam Cinema
The movie holds the distinction of being the first female-led Malayalam film to cross the ₹100 crore mark. It also introduces Indian cinema’s first female superhero, making the achievement even more significant. For lead actress Kalyani Priyadarshan, the film marks her entry into the elite group of stars delivering a ₹200 crore global hit.
The Lokah Franchise
Lokah: Chapter 1 – Chandra is the opening part of a planned five-film superhero series produced by actor Dulquer Salmaan. The second film will feature Tovino Thomas, the third will star Dulquer himself, and the fourth is expected to include veteran actor Mammootty. This ambitious franchise aims to bring a new wave of superhero storytelling to Indian cinema.
The film’s success signals a shift in audience acceptance of female-led projects in mainstream cinema. It also highlights the growing global reach of Malayalam films.
