Actress Malavika Mohanan reflects on the evolving landscape of female-led films in the Indian film industry. She believes that big-budget movies starring women are becoming more common but still face challenges.
In a recent interview with News 18, Malavika Mohanan reflects on the hesitancy of producers and actors to invest in high-budget films led by women. She explained that many in the industry think female-led films do not attract large audiences.
โWhat a lot of male producers and actors have said in the past is that if thereโs a female-led film, it wonโt have that sort of pull,โ Malavika said. She added that this mindset limits investments, meaning only a few female-led big-budget films are made.
Malavika Mohanan reflects on the success of films like Lokah, which proved that female leads can carry high-budget projects. She noted that Lokah featured Kalyani, a young actress, and succeeded because the producers believed in her talent and the filmโs content.
โThe film happened because its producers bet on it and had faith in Kalyani that she would be able to carry it off,โ Malavika explained. She emphasized that such successes show female actors can headline major films, but few producers take that risk.
The actress pointed out that most high-budget films in India are still led by male protagonists. Despite this, the industry is gradually recognizing the commercial viability of female-led projects, encouraging more producers to consider women as leads.
Malavika Mohanan reflects that audience acceptance has grown, but systemic hesitations remain. She believes that with continued support and faith in women actors, big-budget female-led films will become a common trend in Indian cinema.
The actressโs insights highlight the evolving attitudes in Bollywood and regional industries, showing that talent and content can overcome traditional biases against female leads in high-budget films.
