Netflix Price Hike Sparks Outrage as Subscribers Threaten Boycott

Netflix Price Hike Sparks Outrage as Subscribers Threaten Boycott

Streaming giant Netflix is facing strong criticism in Australia after announcing another round of subscription price increases. The decision has sparked outrage among long-time subscribers, with many threatening to cancel or boycott the service.

New Netflix Prices in Australia

From late September 2025, Netflix raised its subscription fees across multiple plans:

  • Basic with ads: increased by $2
  • Standard ad-free: increased by $2
  • Premium: increased by $3
  • Account sharing fee: increased by $1

Subscribers reported receiving official emails confirming the updated charges. One user shared that their monthly Premium plan rose to $28.99, effective from September 25, 2025.

Angry Users Threaten Boycott

The price hike triggered an immediate wave of backlash on social media. Many users expressed frustration, saying that costs keep rising without noticeable improvements in service.

One subscriber warned: โ€œWeโ€™re going to witness piracy by the likes never seen before.โ€ Another, who had been with Netflix for nine years, confirmed they cancelled their membership after receiving the update. Others argued that boycotts are the only way to push back against what they see as corporate greed.

Netflix Responds to Criticism

In response, a Netflix spokesperson defended the decision. They said that the platform offers different plans to meet user needs and occasionally adjusts pricing when new features or fresh content are introduced.

Despite this explanation, critics argue that the streaming service is becoming too expensive, especially with rising competition. Platforms like Disney+, Prime Video, and Stan continue to expand in Australia, giving viewers multiple alternatives.

Uncertain Future

Analysts warn that the latest backlash could impact Netflixโ€™s long-term presence in Australia. Once considered the go-to streaming platform, Netflix now faces a fragmented market where switching to rivalsโ€”or even returning to piracyโ€”has become easier than ever for dissatisfied users.
