Indian actress and global icon Priyanka Chopra Jonas took to social media to congratulate Zohran Mamdani on his groundbreaking victory as the 111th Mayor of New York City, marking a historic moment for both the city and the South Asian community.
Following the announcement of Mamdani’s win, the Citadel star — who now resides in New York with her husband, singer Nick Jonas — shared her excitement in an Instagram Story. She reposted a screenshot from Mamdani’s victory speech and captioned it:
“Congratulations Zohran Mamdani. New York City’s 111th Mayor! History made.”
Priyanka also extended her warm wishes to Mamdani’s mother, the celebrated filmmaker Mira Nair, writing:
“Congratulations, Mira Nair.”
A Historic Milestone
At 34 years old, Zohran Mamdani has become New York City’s youngest and first Muslim mayor, a remarkable milestone in the city’s diverse political landscape. Born in Kampala, Uganda, and raised in Cape Town, Mamdani later moved to New York, where he pursued a career in politics.
Before his mayoral win, he served as a New York State Assemblyman, earning widespread recognition for his grassroots organizing, progressive policies, and advocacy for immigrant rights and affordable housing.
Mamdani is the son of Mira Nair, the internationally acclaimed director of films such as Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake, and Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan-Indian scholar and author.
Priyanka’s New York Connection
Priyanka Chopra’s connection to New York City dates back to 2016, when she moved there to film her American television debut, Quantico, which aired on ABC. Since then, the actress has made the city her permanent home. She married Nick Jonas in December 2018, and the couple now lives in Manhattan with their daughter, Malti Marie Jonas.
As both an international entertainer and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Chopra has often celebrated South Asian representation and success stories abroad — making her message of support for Mamdani’s historic win particularly meaningful.
