Ranveer Singh Booked Over Alleged Religious Sentiments Controversy

Ranveer Singh Booked Over Alleged Religious Sentiments Controversy

Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh is facing legal action after a controversial performance at the 2025 International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. The FIR was filed in Bengaluru on Wednesday, January 28, alleging that the actor offended Hindu religious sentiments.

The complaint was registered at Bengaluruโ€™s High Grounds Police Station. According to the FIR, Ranveer Singh mocked sacred elements of the Chavundi Daiva tradition of coastal Karnataka during a stage act on November 28, 2025.

Lawyer Prashanth Methal, who filed the complaint, stated that Ranveer Singh mimicked Panjurli and Guliga Daiva expressions in a humorous and inappropriate manner. He reportedly referred to the Chavundi Daiva as a โ€œfemale ghost,โ€ which the complainant claimed denigrated the religious practice.

The FIR invokes Sections 196, 299, and 302 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). It follows a court directive issued on January 23, 2026, instructing the High Grounds Police Station to file a formal complaint under Section 175, clause 3 of the BNS.

According to reports, the actorโ€™s performance was inspired by a scene from Rishab Shettyโ€™s film Kantara: Chapter 1 โ€“ A Legend. The mimicry act allegedly portrayed the sacred Daiva expressions in a crass and humorous way. Authorities said the complaint focuses on the perceived disparagement of religious elements rather than personal criticism of any individual.

Supporters of the actor argue that the performance was intended as entertainment and inspired by cinematic content, not as an insult to religious beliefs. However, the FIR claims the act crossed cultural and religious boundaries, prompting legal action.

This incident adds to ongoing debates in India regarding freedom of expression in entertainment versus respect for religious sentiments. Legal experts say the case may take time to resolve, as courts often balance artistic freedom with religious protections.

The matter has drawn attention from fans, the media, and legal commentators. Many are now closely watching how the case involving Ranveer Singh unfolds in the coming weeks.
