25 Years Without Nazia Hassan — Pakistan Still Sings Her Songs

It has been 25 years since Pakistan lost its beloved pop sensation, Nazia Hassan. Known for her unique voice, trendsetting style, and record-breaking hits, she remains an enduring icon in South Asian music.

Born on April 3, 1965, in Karachi, Nazia Hassan began her musical journey at just 10 years old as a child star. At 15, she made history with her debut song Aap Jaisa Koi for the 1980 Bollywood film Qurbani. The track became a global hit and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer — the first Pakistani to receive the honor.

Working alongside her brother Zoheb Hassan, she redefined Pakistan’s pop music scene. Their debut album Disco Deewane broke sales records in over a dozen countries.

Follow-up albums like Boom Boom, Young Tarang, and Hotline further cemented her reputation as Pakistan’s “Queen of Pop.”

By the time she stepped away from the spotlight, Nazia Hassan had sold an estimated 6.5 million cassettes worldwide — a remarkable feat for a South Asian artist of her time.

Tragically, she passed away on August 13, 2000, in London at just 35 after battling lung cancer. Despite her short life, her music continues to inspire. From radio broadcasts to modern streaming platforms, her voice still connects with audiences across generations.

On this anniversary, fans and fellow musicians are paying heartfelt tributes, remembering her as more than a singer — she was a pioneer who paved the way for countless artists. Her legacy remains alive in every beat of her timeless songs.
