The Resident Evil franchise is set to release its ninth instalment this Friday. The new game continues the seriesโ 30-year tradition of horror and high-intensity action.
The upcoming title, named Resident Evil Requiem, will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2 consoles. The game returns to the seriesโ roots, immersing players in Raccoon City, a fictional US town filled with dark conspiracies.
Game director Koshi Nakanishi told AFP that returning to a familiar setting was a key goal. โIt was timeโฆ to go back to a very well-known setting,โ he said. Over 200 people contributed to developing the game, including detailed storylines and cinematic action sequences.
The story follows FBI agent Grace, a new protagonist, alongside returning fan-favourite Leon Kennedy. Players will experience tense first-person sequences to heighten vulnerability, alternating with third-person action scenes for combat and exploration.
As the narrative unfolds, it transitions from a police procedural into a classic Resident Evil plot: a dangerous virus outbreak and a government cover-up that transforms humans into zombies.
Since 1996, Resident Evil has sold over 180 million copies worldwide. It remains Capcomโs most successful franchise, surpassing other hits like Street Fighter and Monster Hunter. The game series has seen multiple remakes, spinoffs, and adaptations, making it a staple in both gaming and pop culture.
In addition to the game release, Resident Evil is returning to cinemas with a feature film directed by Zach Cregger, set to premiere this September. The film is expected to expand the franchiseโs audience while complementing the latest game release.
Fans of survival horror and action gaming are eagerly awaiting Resident Evil Requiem. With its mix of familiar characters, new heroes, and intense gameplay, the franchise continues to define the genre.
