LAHORE โ A legal petition has been filed in a Lahore sessions court over the use of a police uniform by actor Saba Qamar in off-screen content shared on social media.
The petition seeks the registration of a criminal case against Saba Qamar for allegedly wearing a Punjab Police uniform outside a fictional setting. The matter relates to behind-the-scenes material that surfaced online in 2023.
The issue dates back to the time when her drama Serial Killer aired on Green Entertainment. In the show, Saba Qamar played Superintendent of Police Sarah Sikander. She wore the official police uniform as part of her on-screen role.
According to the petition, the drama production had obtained a valid no-objection certificate. This permission covered the use of the uniform during filming for the serial.
However, the petitioner raised objections to a behind-the-scenes video and two photographs. These visuals showed the actor wearing the Punjab Police uniform with an SP badge. The content was filmed in a dressing room during hair styling.
The petitioner argued that the material appeared non-fictional. It was not part of the dramaโs storyline. The application claims that wearing an official police uniform outside an approved production violates the law.
The petition states that no individual can wear police attire or insignia without proper authorization. It argues that such actions fall under impersonation and misuse of official symbols under the Pakistan Penal Code.
The content later circulated widely on social media platforms. It has since been removed from Saba Qamarโs official accounts, according to the petition.
The petitioner further claimed that such visuals could mislead the public. It said the act could affect public trust in the Punjab Police. The application described the use of the uniform as unlawful and disrespectful to the institution.
The petitioner, Waseem Zawar, told the court that he had earlier approached Old Anarkali Police Station. He claimed that his request to register a case was not acted upon.
Due to the alleged inaction, he filed the petition before the sessions court. Advocate Mujaddid Bajwa represented the petitioner during the hearing.
Additional Sessions Judge Ilyas Rehan conducted the preliminary hearing. After reviewing the arguments, the court sought comments from police authorities.
The judge directed the police to submit a written response. Further proceedings have been adjourned until January 14.
