In a fascinating discussion with Khaleej Times, renowned filmmaker and actor Sarmad Khoosat embarked on a journey to explore the profound legacy of the legendary Saadat Hasan Manto. With a candid perspective, Khoosat skillfully navigated the intricate terrain of Manto’s literary brilliance, providing insight into the profound influence this maestro of words has had on his artistic journey.
Khoosat stumbled upon Manto quite serendipitously during a challenging period in his life when his house had caught fire. Recounting this discovery, he shared how Manto’s scandalous literature in Urdu left him dumbstruck. Despite his English education, Manto stayed with him, influencing his thoughts and discussions during his college years.

Expressing deep affinity for adapting Manto’s tales, Khoosat highlighted the meaningful relationship he has cultivated with Manto’s family. He shared an anecdote about adapting a Manto story for TV and how it led to a bond with Manto’s daughters. This connection has endured, with the daughters attending his performances and providing encouragement for his other works.
Reflecting on an era marked by literary censorship, Khoosat emphasized how exploring the works of progressive writers, like Manto, served as an escape during challenging times. The written word became a sanctuary, offering solace and a platform for unfiltered perspectives.
Addressing the influence of ‘Mantoism’ in his other works, Khoosat noted that while not conscious, the sensibility of freedom has always been present. He acknowledged that artists subconsciously imbibe the sensibilities of those they admire, even if their work takes a different form.
Khoosat’s cinematic exploration of Manto’s life in 2013 coincided with Nandita Das’s biopic on Manto. Despite parallel timelines, Khoosat emphasized the distinctiveness of each cinematic venture. His journey has extended beyond Manto, with films like Zindagi Tamasha, Kamli, and Joyland resonating globally. Anticipation surrounds his next cinematic endeavor, a dark comedy with an actress he hasn’t worked with in a long time.
Acknowledging the ebb and flow of responses, from accolades to constructive criticism, Khoosat expressed his self-doubt as an artist. However, he recognized the loyal audience for his work and credited Manto for making his journey more interesting, allowing him to find a stronger voice.
