Is The Simpsons Coming To An End? Matt Selman Drops A Hint

As the iconic animated series The Simpsons prepares to air its 800th episode on February 15, fans are asking about Simpson’s end. The long-running Fox show has been on air since 1989. Yet its creators say a traditional finale is unlikely.

Showrunner Matt Selman recently shared how Simpson’s end would look if it ever happened. He said the series would not close with an emotional goodbye. Instead, it would likely end with a normal episode featuring the family.

He explained that there would be no dramatic farewell scene. There would be no final speech or tearful exit. The episode might include small hidden details for fans. However, it would avoid common TV ending clichés.

In fact, the creative team already explored a parody of Simpson’s end. During the season 36 premiere in September 2024, the show mocked the idea of a perfect finale. That episode included many classic ending ideas in one story. It served as a playful message that a real finale may never happen.

The show was created by Matt Groening. Over the decades, Springfield and its residents have stayed mostly unchanged. The format resets every week. Events rarely carry over into the next episode.

Selman compared the structure to a time loop. He said the characters relive life again and again. They do not age much. Major changes are rare and often reversed.

Some characters have permanently exited the show. For example, Larry the Barfly died in season 35. He first appeared in the series’ debut episode. There was also a flash-forward scene that showed Marge’s death. That moment caused strong reactions online.

Later, Selman clarified the scene was only fictional. He said future episodes are speculative. They present different possibilities each time. Marge’s death was not permanent in the main storyline.

As the 800th episode approaches, talk about Simpson’s end continues. However, the producers insist the show’s spirit remains the same. If it ever concludes, it will likely do so quietly. For now, Springfield’s story goes on.
