TikTok Rolls Out Voice Notes and Photo Sharing to Boost Messaging Experience

TikTok Rolls Out Voice Notes and Photo Sharing to Boost Messaging Experience

TikTok is expanding its services beyond short videos with the launch of new messaging tools. The platform now allows users to send 60-second voice notes and share up to nine photos or videos in one-to-one and group chats.

This update marks an important step for TikTok as it aims to compete with popular messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram. By offering voice notes and media sharing, the app is moving closer to becoming a complete social platform rather than just a video-sharing service.

Voice Notes on TikTok
With the new feature, users can record and send audio messages of up to 60 seconds in direct messages. TikTok says this option caters to a growing trend among Gen Z, who increasingly prefer sending voice notes instead of typing text messages.

This addition brings TikTok in line with social networks that already rely heavily on audio-based messaging. The company expects this feature to encourage more personal and engaging communication on the app.

Photo and Video Sharing in Chats
Alongside voice notes, TikTok is also introducing the ability to share multiple photos or videos in chats. Users can either capture new media through the app’s camera or upload files from their phone’s gallery. Editing tools will also be available before sending.

However, TikTok has introduced a safety restriction. First-time message requests cannot include media files captured directly through the camera. Instead, senders can only share content already available on TikTok. This step is designed to prevent unsolicited or unsafe content from being sent to users.

Focus on Safety and Engagement
The company highlighted that user safety remains a top priority. By controlling how media is shared in direct messages, TikTok aims to reduce risks such as spam and unwanted content.

With these updates, TikTok is signaling its ambition to strengthen its role as a full-fledged social platform. By enhancing direct messaging, the app hopes to keep users engaged in conversations without switching to other apps like WhatsApp or Instagram.
