KARACHI: Pakistani actor Ushna Shah has written an open letter to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. In her message, she urged immediate steps to stop animal cruelty in the province.
Ushna Shah shared the letter on Instagram. She began by acknowledging what she described as positive changes under the chief minister’s leadership. She mentioned improvements in women’s safety, cleanliness, and public order. However, she raised concern over what she called silence on animal abuse cases.
The actor referred to a recent viral video from Punjab. The video allegedly showed a dog tied to a vehicle and dragged on a road. She said such incidents create a negative image of the province. According to her, repeated cruelty cases are surfacing without visible deterrence.
Ushna Shah also mentioned other reported incidents. These included animals crushed in busy markets and donkeys beaten in public areas. She highlighted the issue of organized dog fighting as well. She wrote that animals cannot speak for themselves. She described them as “Allah ki makhlooq,” stressing their right to protection.
In her letter, Ushna Shah suggested several reforms. She called for province-wide spay and neuter programs instead of culling stray animals. She also demanded stricter enforcement of existing animal cruelty laws. She proposed regulating donkey carts to prevent injuries to animals.
The actor further recommended banning wild animals as pets. She urged authorities to end dog fighting activities. She also called for reforms in animal markets. Another key proposal was to convert zoos into sanctuaries for better animal care.
Ushna Shah wrote that strong action could set an example for the rest of the country. She said Punjab could become a model province in animal welfare. She added that true progress includes protection for all living beings.
