Tamil actor and politician Thalapathy Vijay has announced financial aid for families affected by the Vijay rally stampede in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday and claimed 41 lives, including women and children.
Vijay, who recently launched his political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), pledged ₹20 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also promised ₹2 lakh for those injured and receiving treatment. In a heartfelt note shared on X, Vijay described the tragedy as an “irreparable loss.” He said no amount could replace loved ones, but standing with the victims’ families was his duty.
According to reports, the rally drew nearly three times the expected crowd. Police had prepared for around 100,000 attendees, but close to 300,000 people gathered at the venue. With no sign of Vijay until evening, many people had been waiting for hours in the scorching heat without enough food or water. The situation led to chaos and eventually a stampede.
Authorities confirmed that 41 people died, including 18 women, 13 men, and 10 children. Another 56 were injured. Rescue teams and police rushed to manage the situation and transport the injured to hospitals.
The Tamil Nadu government also announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for the families of the dead and ₹1 lakh for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and offered ₹2 lakh for each deceased victim and ₹50,000 for each injured person.
The Vijay rally stampede has sparked conversations about safety measures at large political gatherings. Questions are being raised about crowd control, venue preparedness, and responsibility in such high-profile events.
Vijay assured his supporters that he stands with the grieving families and urged people to prioritize safety during future gatherings.
