Magnitude 4.9 earthquake hits near Australia’s east coast

BRISBANE – A Magnitude 4.9 earthquake struck Queensland near Brisbane, cutting power to 11,000 properties. No tsunami threat was reported, officials confirmed. earthquake struck near the east coast of Australia on Saturday, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The quake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Initially, the tremor was reported as 5.7 magnitude, but later updated to Magnitude 4.9 by monitoring agencies.

Epicentre near Kilkivian

Geoscience Australia confirmed that the earthquake’s epicentre was in the rural town of Kilkivian, located about 170 kilometers northwest of Brisbane. The tremor was widely felt across Queensland, with more than 9,000 people reporting the impact online.

Despite the intensity, Australia’s weather forecaster confirmed there was no tsunami threat for Queensland. Authorities, however, urged residents to remain cautious and report any structural damage.

Power outages reported

The earthquake also caused disruptions to energy supplies. A spokesperson for Energex, the state-run power distribution company, told local media that around 11,000 properties were left without electricity following the tremor. Repair teams were immediately dispatched to restore services in affected areas.

Widespread tremors across Queensland

Residents across several towns reported feeling the earthquake, describing the tremors as brief but strong enough to rattle homes and workplaces. Emergency services said no major injuries were reported, but safety inspections are being carried out in impacted districts.

Earthquake monitoring

Authorities noted that while Australia is not located on a major fault line, earthquakes of low to moderate strength do occasionally occur. The Magnitude 4.9 tremor is one of the strongest to hit Queensland in recent years.

Geoscience Australia continues to monitor aftershocks and urged citizens to follow safety guidelines during seismic events.
