Authorities have confirmed the identification of 15 more victims from the Gul Plaza fire, one of the deadliest building fires in Karachi’s recent history. The latest results come from the Sindh Forensic DNA Lab.
Officials leading the identification project said that a total of 69 victims have now been identified. Of these, 42 were confirmed using proof of presence methods, 22 through DNA testing, and the remaining through mobile phone location data and other scientific techniques.
“Identification of the 15 more victims shows how careful and methodical the process has been,” said a project spokesperson. As DNA testing options became limited, investigators increasingly relied on proof of presence to confirm identities accurately.
Authorities stressed that the forensic process is ongoing, and families of victims are being provided updates as soon as results are verified. The careful approach ensures that no family receives misleading information.
The Gul Plaza fire, which occurred after a matchstick ignited artificial flowers in a ground-floor shop, spread rapidly due to flammable materials and structural flaws. Delays in emergency response, lack of fire alarms, blocked exits, and insufficient firefighting equipment contributed to the scale of the tragedy.
Rescue officials said Rescue 1122 units were dispatched immediately, but water shortages and limited access to the building slowed the operation. Narrow entry points, iron grills, and heavy smoke made it difficult to save trapped occupants.
Meanwhile, the Sindh government has requested a judicial inquiry into the incident. Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said a serving judge will lead the investigation to ensure transparency and credibility.
Officials also confirmed that the investigation report has revealed serious safety lapses, inadequate emergency planning, and negligence by building management. Authorities plan further action based on the findings.
With the identification of 15 more victims, authorities hope to provide closure to families while reinforcing the need for stricter building safety regulations in Karachi.
