A moderate earthquake struck Ziarat and surrounding areas in Balochistan early on Saturday, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Departmentβs National Seismic Monitoring Centre. The tremor measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre located 67 kilometres northeast of Quetta.
There are no immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage. However, residents described a frightening start to the day as buildings shook and aftershocks continued into the morning. Many recalled the devastating 2008 Ziarat earthquake, which claimed over 200 lives, injured hundreds, and flattened several villages.
Balochistan lies along a highly active seismic zone, where the Indian plate presses against the Eurasian plate. The region has faced repeated tremors over the decades. Its sparse population and rugged terrain often make rescue and relief operations challenging. Districts including Pishin, Bolan, Chaman, and Quetta have also experienced tremors in recent days.
Saturdayβs earthquake follows a series of seismic events in the region. Earlier this month, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake near Mazar-e-Sharif in northern Afghanistan killed at least seven people and injured 150. Such activity highlights the ongoing risk in this part of South Asia.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to stay alert. Precautionary measures, including avoiding unstable buildings and preparing emergency supplies, have been recommended. Aftershocks are expected, and local authorities are ready to respond if needed.
Residents reported minor damages like cracked walls and broken glass, but no significant infrastructure has been affected so far. Emergency services remain on standby, emphasizing public safety and awareness during these seismic events.
The recent earthquake serves as a reminder of the regionβs vulnerability to natural disasters. Officials continue to stress the importance of preparedness, early warning systems, and community awareness to minimize risks in future seismic events.
