Earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Islamabad, and Rawalpindi on Wednesday. The sudden tremors caused panic among residents in several areas.
People in many neighborhoods rushed out of homes and offices as the ground shook briefly. The tremors were felt across multiple cities, prompting fear and concern among the public.
According to the seismological centre, the Earthquake originated in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. Officials reported that the quake occurred at a depth of about 114 kilometers below the surface.
The tremors were widely felt in major cities including Peshawar, Rawalpindi, and Swabi. Residents in surrounding areas also reported noticeable shaking. Several people said the tremors lasted a few seconds but were strong enough to alarm citizens.
Authorities confirmed that shocks were also felt in Bajaur, Diamer city, and nearby localities. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties or property damage after the Earthquake.
Emergency services remained alert following the tremors. Officials advised residents to stay calm and follow safety precautions in case of aftershocks.
The latest Earthquake comes only days after another quake of similar magnitude struck parts of KP and Punjab. On February 20, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake was recorded by the seismological centre.
That earlier quake also affected several cities, including Islamabad and Peshawar. According to officials, its epicentre was also located in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region but at a depth of 73 kilometers.
Pakistan is considered highly vulnerable to earthquakes due to its geographic location. The country lies near the boundary where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. This tectonic movement makes the region one of the most seismically active areas in the world.
In recent decades, Pakistan has experienced several destructive earthquakes. One of the most devastating occurred in 2005 in Azad Kashmir. The disaster killed more than 73,000 people and left millions homeless.
Another deadly quake struck Balochistan in 2021. The earthquake in Harnai killed at least 20 people and caused landslides that disrupted rescue efforts.
Experts say the mountainous terrain in many earthquake-prone regions can make emergency response difficult. Because of this, disaster preparedness and public awareness remain very important.

The recent tremors in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and KP again highlight the ongoing seismic risk in the region. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely while urging citizens to remain cautious.
