PTA Confirms New Date for 5G Spectrum Auction in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has confirmed the date for the upcoming 5G spectrum auction. The โ€œSpectrum Auction for Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS)/5G in Pakistanโ€ will take place on March 10, 2026.

The authority announced the final schedule after detailed consultations with stakeholders. Regulatory coordination was also completed to ensure a smooth process. Officials said the goal is a transparent and well-managed auction.

Earlier, the auction was expected in the last week of February 2026. The revised date provides telecom operators with more preparation time. PTA said the updated timeline reflects its commitment to fair participation and regulatory compliance.

Interested companies have been advised to review the Information Memorandum for NGMS and 5G in Pakistan. PTA has also asked bidders to follow updates shared on its official website. These documents outline auction rules, obligations, and technical requirements.

The authority confirmed that the 5G rollout will be gradual. This approach follows international best practices. Initial services will be limited to major cities and high-demand locations.

In Islamabad, 5G will first be available in Blue Area and F-10. Karachi users will see early access in Defence and Clifton. Lahore and other provincial capitals will also receive coverage in key commercial zones.

Telecom operators will be required to deploy 5G on at least 10 percent of their existing network sites in the first year. Expansion will depend on market demand and device availability. User adoption will also influence coverage growth.

Where 5G is active, users can expect speeds 14 to 15 times faster than current services. In areas without 5G, improved 4G performance will continue. PTA emphasized that service quality will improve nationwide.

The authority stated that the launch is not only about speed. It aims to raise mobile internet standards across Pakistan. Better connectivity is expected to support businesses, education, and digital services.

PTA said continuous monitoring will ensure operators meet rollout obligations. The authority also plans to engage with industry players after the auction. These steps are meant to support long-term digital growth.
