Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Hits China’s Xinjiang Region, Tremors Felt Widely

China reported a Magnitude 6.0 earthquake in Xinjiang on Thursday, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The strong quake struck the remote northwest region, which borders Kyrgyzstan, and caused widespread concern among local authorities and residents.

The Magnitude 6.0 earthquake hit near Akqi County at 3:44 pm local time (0744 GMT). CENC confirmed that the epicentre was located close to the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres. Shallow quakes often cause stronger shaking, increasing the risk of structural damage in nearby areas.

Initial reports from local media said the earthquake was felt in several surrounding towns. Emergency teams were immediately sent to the affected region to assess the situation. So far, there have been no confirmed reports of major damage or casualties, but officials stated that monitoring efforts are still ongoing.

Residents living near Akqi described feeling strong vibrations that lasted several seconds. Some people rushed outdoors as precautionary measures, following safety guidelines issued for the seismically active Xinjiang region. The area has experienced multiple moderate quakes in recent years due to its complex geological structure.

Authorities said the priority is to ensure the safety of people living in vulnerable houses and remote villages. Inspection teams have been deployed to check schools, hospitals, and key infrastructure. Power and communication services remained functional after the Magnitude 6.0 quake, but the government warned that aftershocks are possible.

Xinjiang lies close to active tectonic fault lines, making earthquakes a recurring risk. China frequently conducts emergency drills in the region to prepare for such natural disasters. The latest quake has once again highlighted the need for strong preparedness and rapid response mechanisms.

CENC continues to track seismic activity and will issue updates if there are further developments. Officials urged residents to stay alert and follow instructions from local authorities.
