Air Quality Declines In Cities As Temperatures Drop

Air quality has deteriorated sharply across several cities in Pakistan on Saturday, raising health concerns. Lahore ranked as the second most polluted city in the world with a particulate matter level of 286.

Karachi also faced poor air quality, registering a reading of 233 on the Air Quality Index. Peshawar recorded the worst air quality in the country, with a reading of 537 particulate matters. Other cities affected include Faisalabad at 384, Khanewal at 304, and Multan at 208 particulate matters.

Experts from the Commission for Air Quality Management said the worsening air quality is caused by high moisture and a shift in wind direction. These conditions prevent the dispersion of pollutants, leading to smog formation.

Punjab has faced severe air pollution during winter in past years. Low temperatures, diesel emissions, and smoke from seasonal agricultural burning have often combined to create hazardous smog. Lahore has previously experienced air pollution levels exceeding 80 times the safe limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Authorities have taken emergency measures in response to poor air quality. In the past, schools were closed, and operating hours for businesses, markets, and eateries were restricted to reduce public exposure to harmful pollutants.

Health experts warn that prolonged exposure to poor air quality can cause respiratory problems, cardiovascular issues, and other serious health risks. The public has been advised to limit outdoor activity, wear protective masks, and use air purifiers where possible.

With winter conditions contributing to stagnant air, Pakistan continues to struggle with managing air quality. Officials urge stricter enforcement of pollution control measures, including controlling industrial emissions and reducing crop burning, to prevent further deterioration.

Residents are encouraged to monitor daily air quality readings and take precautions to protect themselves, particularly vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.
