Punjab’s flagship housing initiative, the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar Program, has received international recognition from UN-Habitat.

The programme has been selected for the prestigious UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award. The award recognises efforts to improve access to housing for low-income families.

The Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency received the official notification. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme issued the notification.

Punjab government representatives have been invited to receive the award. The ceremony will take place on October 5 in Muscat, Oman.

The event will be held as part of World Habitat Day celebrations. The award highlights Punjab’s efforts in expanding affordable housing opportunities.

UN-Habitat said the programme was selected after a competitive global evaluation. The organisation reviewed housing initiatives from different parts of the world.

According to UN-Habitat, the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar Program stood out for its focus on low-income households. The initiative aims to provide safer and more affordable housing options.

The programme was launched by the Punjab government in August 2024. It provides interest-free housing loans to eligible applicants across the province.

The latest figures show significant progress under the initiative. As of September 10, 2026, loans worth Rs259.68 billion had been disbursed.

These loans have been provided to 200,072 applicants across Punjab. The figures show the scale of the housing programme since its launch.

The award notification was signed by UN Under-Secretary-General and UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Marinheiro Centeno Rossbach.

The notification highlighted the programme’s contribution to expanding housing access. It also formally invited provincial officials to attend the award ceremony.

UN-Habitat will provide support for the Punjab delegation attending the event. This support includes an economy-class air ticket and accommodation.

The organisation will also provide a daily allowance to the recipient. Logistical assistance will also be available during the participation.

The international award adds further recognition to Punjab’s housing initiative. It also places the Apni Chhat Apna Ghar Program among programmes recognised for housing-related efforts.

The Punjab government is expected to receive the honour during the World Habitat Day event. The ceremony will take place in Muscat on October 5.

The programme continues to provide financial support to eligible households. Its latest disbursement figures indicate continued implementation across Punjab.
