Asteroid Incinerates in Earth’s Atmosphere Above Philippines

A 1-meter asteroid burned up in Earth’s atmosphere over the Philippines near Luzon Island on Wednesday afternoon, as reported by NASA. The European Space Agency (ESA) noted the impact occurred at 12:39 p.m. ET (4:39 p.m. UTC).

The asteroid, initially named CAQTDL2 and later renamed 2024 RW1, was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey. NASA estimates asteroids of this size hit Earth approximately every two weeks, though they are rarely detected before impact.

This marked only the ninth time an asteroid has been observed before impact, according to ESA. Fortunately, the small size of the asteroid meant it was harmless, burning up in the atmosphere upon entry.

Sky-watchers in the area shared videos of the bright fireball on social media, capturing the dramatic sight as the asteroid disintegrated.
