Baku – Azerbaijan has confirmed that it will not send troops as peacekeepers to Gaza, President Ilham Aliyev announced on Monday.
Speaking to Azeri television, Aliyev emphasized that Azerbaijan has no plans to participate in peacekeeping operations outside its borders. He specifically mentioned Gaza, where tensions between Israel and Hamas continue to escalate.
Aliyev said, “We prepared a questionnaire of more than 20 questions and provided it to the American side. No participation in peacekeeping forces is envisaged.” He added that Azerbaijan is not considering involvement in hostilities abroad under any circumstances.
The president also highlighted that Azerbaijan had been in contact with the US administration, led by Donald Trump, regarding the proposed peacekeeping operation. However, after reviewing details and conditions, the country decided against sending any peacekeepers.
An Azeri government source had earlier indicated that troops would only be deployed if there were a complete halt to fighting between Israel and Hamas. Without such a ceasefire, Azerbaijan’s participation as peacekeepers is off the table.
Experts say Azerbaijan’s decision aligns with its long-standing policy of avoiding involvement in foreign conflicts. Sending peacekeepers requires strict operational rules, political consensus, and the assurance of safety for troops – conditions that Azerbaijan determined were not met.
Aliyev’s remarks underscore the country’s focus on domestic security and regional stability rather than participating in overseas military operations. Peacekeeping missions, while often seen as humanitarian or stabilizing, also carry significant strategic and political risks.
Azerbaijan’s stance is expected to influence regional discussions on peacekeeping in Gaza. As the situation remains tense, the international community continues to explore options to reduce violence and support civilian protection.
