Bangladesh and Pakistan Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties at D-8 Summit

In a significant development, Bangladesh and Pakistan have expressed their commitment to resolve long-standing issues related to the 1971 war and improve their relations, Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated during a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Cairo on Thursday. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the Developing Eight (D-8) Organization for Economic Cooperation summit.

Yunus emphasized the importance of addressing these “outstanding grievances” to pave the way for a better future. The discussions also focused on enhancing bilateral ties through increased trade, cultural exchanges, and sports collaborations. Yunus shared his hope for the revival of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), urging the leaders to organize a summit despite any challenges.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed similar sentiments, underscoring the need for enhanced economic cooperation, particularly in sectors such as chemicals, IT, and textiles. The two leaders also discussed improving visa facilitation and eliminating additional clearance requirements, further easing trade and travel between the nations.

The meeting also covered broader issues such as the situation in Palestine, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to support the Palestinian cause. The Cairo summit brought together leaders from eight member countries, with discussions also revolving around regional stability and economic development.
