LAHORE – The Punjab government has cancelled the official inauguration ceremony of the Basant Festival, which was originally scheduled for February 6, 2026, at Lahore’s Shahi Qila.
Officials stated that the decision was taken to ensure strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) during the festival celebrations across the city. Authorities emphasized that public safety remains their top priority.
Instead of the full-scale inauguration ceremony, the government is now considering a symbolic event. Selected foreign guests and prominent personalities may participate in controlled kite-flying activities within Lahore’s historic Walled City.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari confirmed that the government has granted permission for kite flying to the general public. However, she stressed that authorities are responsible for enforcing safety regulations and monitoring festival activities.
During Basant, special monitoring camp offices will be established at the Safe City headquarters and the District Commissioner’s office. These offices will oversee compliance with safety measures and respond to any emergencies promptly.
The minister also urged citizens to celebrate the festival responsibly. She reminded participants to follow all SOPs carefully to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone attending the celebrations.
While the official inauguration ceremony has been cancelled, officials hope the symbolic event will maintain the festive spirit. Authorities said this approach balances public enjoyment with safety and law enforcement requirements.
The decision reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to ensuring that Basant returns as a cultural celebration while preventing accidents and violations. Residents are encouraged to enjoy kite flying in designated areas under supervision.
