One Dead, Six Injured in Lahore During Basant Celebrations

Lahore witnessed a tragic start to Basant this year, with at least one person killed and six others injured in kite-related incidents across the city.

Rescue officials reported that 25-year-old Ali Rashid lost his life near Sikh Nullah. He climbed an electric pole to catch a kite and was electrocuted. His body was handed over to his family after completing legal formalities.

In another incident, eight-year-old Irha was seriously injured in Gulshan-e-Ravi when a kite string wrapped around her neck while riding a motorcycle with her father. She was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.

Other accidents occurred across Lahore. Thirty-year-old Saqib fell from a rooftop while trying to retrieve a kite in the Ravi Road area. Twelve-year-old Abdul Wahid was injured while chasing a kite in Lower Mall. In Gulshan-e-Ravi, 14-year-old Salman was hurt climbing a tree to get a kite, and 45-year-old Shabbir suffered injuries from a kite string wrapped around his neck. Additionally, 21-year-old Rafi Tanveer was injured in Defence Phase 5 due to a similar accident.

Rescue teams have urged residents to remain cautious during Basant celebrations. They emphasized that kite flying, while festive, carries significant risks if safety rules are ignored.

Authorities also reported multiple violations of safety regulations in several areas. Despite the joyous atmosphere of Basant, the accidents highlight the need for stricter enforcement and awareness campaigns to prevent injuries and fatalities.

Officials have advised families to supervise children during kite flying and to avoid climbing rooftops or electric poles. Using protective gear and following safety protocols were strongly recommended to reduce risks.
