Bhati Gate Tragedy: Maryam Nawaz Calls Negligence Murder, Orders Rs10m Compensation

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has expressed strong anger over a tragic incident near Bhati Gate in Lahore. A mother and her young daughter lost their lives after falling into an open sewer line. The incident has raised serious concerns about public safety and official negligence.

Chairing an emergency meeting, Maryam Nawaz said such negligence is equal to murder. She stated that this kind of incident is unacceptable in a major city like Lahore. She stressed that citizensโ€™ lives must never be put at risk due to poor infrastructure management.

The chief minister offered heartfelt condolences to the affected family. She directed authorities to ensure immediate financial relief for the victimsโ€™ relatives. She announced that Rs10 million compensation would be paid to the family. This amount will be recovered directly from the responsible contractor.

Maryam Nawaz also ordered strict legal action against those found guilty. She said accountability is necessary to prevent similar tragedies in the future. She made it clear that no individual or department would be spared.

According to officials, the incident occurred near Bhati Gate due to an uncovered sewer line. The mother and daughter accidentally fell into the open drain and could not survive. The tragic deaths caused widespread public outrage across the city.

The incident highlighted serious flaws in Lahoreโ€™s infrastructure safety measures. Many citizens questioned how such a dangerous sewer line remained uncovered. Concerns were also raised about regular inspections and monitoring by authorities.

Following the tragedy, officials nominated three individuals as responsible for negligence. Investigations were launched to determine their roles in the incident. CCTV footage of the victims also surfaced, which further intensified public reaction.

The Punjab government has now directed departments to inspect sewer lines across the city. Special attention will be given to older areas and busy locations. Authorities have been told to cover open drains immediately.
