Canal Road Dropped from Lahore Electric Tram Plan Under New CBD-to-Istanbul Chowk Route

LAHORE: Lahoreโ€™s first electric tram project has faced another major change, as authorities have decided to remove Canal Road from the proposed route before the service becomes operational.

According to the latest plan, the electric tram will no longer pass through Canal Road. Officials cited environmental concerns and technical difficulties as the main reasons behind the decision. The route adjustment aims to avoid potential damage to the environment, including the cutting of trees along Canal Road.

Under the revised proposal, the electric tram will now operate through the Central Business District (CBD), Gulberg, Jail Road, and Istanbul Chowk. Authorities believe the new alignment will be more practical and easier to implement.

The project was introduced as a modern and eco-friendly transport solution for Lahore. However, it has experienced several route changes since it was first announced. The tram arrived in Lahore in July 2025 and attracted public attention during test runs and an exhibition held at Expo Centre in August 2025.

Despite these demonstrations, the electric tram has not yet started regular passenger operations. The repeated revisions have delayed the project and created uncertainty about its launch timeline.

Earlier plans included a 27-kilometer Yellow Line connecting Thokar Niaz Baig and Harbanspura. At one stage, authorities also considered introducing a trackless tram system. Several alternative routes were reviewed, including corridors passing through Kalma Chowk, Liberty Market, Main Market, Mini Market, and Hali Road.

The removal of Canal Road marks another significant shift in the projectโ€™s planning process. Officials maintain that the electric tram remains an important part of Lahoreโ€™s efforts to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion.

However, the frequent route modifications have raised questions among residents regarding the projectโ€™s execution and long-term viability. Many are waiting for clear updates about when the service will finally begin operations.

While authorities continue to refine the project, the latest decision to exclude Canal Road highlights the challenges involved in introducing a new urban transport system. For now, Lahoreโ€™s first electric tram remains in the planning stage, with commuters still awaiting its official launch.
