The dramatic 2023 Battagram chairlift rescue is set to reach Pakistani cinemas through a new documentary.
Titled Hanging By A Wire, the film tells the story of eight people trapped high above the ground.
The passengers were stranded nearly 900 feet above the ground in Battagram’s Allai Valley.
The documentary highlights the bravery of local residents who helped during the dangerous rescue operation.
Producer, director and writer M Ali Naqvi said the film has a wider purpose.
He said the documentary aims to introduce the region’s local heroes to audiences worldwide.
Documentary Highlights Battagram Rescue
The film focuses on the events surrounding the Chairlift Rescue in August 2023.
It includes original footage recorded during the actual rescue operation.
Local residents documented several moments as the rescue unfolded. A local jewellery shop owner also captured drone footage.
The filmmakers used this material to present a detailed account of the emergency.
The documentary also highlights the difficult living conditions in the region.
Chairlifts remain an important means of transportation for many communities in the area.
Many children also depend on these lifts to travel to school.
The film therefore examines both the rescue and the infrastructure challenges faced by residents.
How the Chairlift Rescue Unfolded
The incident took place on August 23, 2023, in Allai Valley, Battagram.
Two cables supporting a chairlift snapped during the incident.
Eight passengers were left stranded as the chairlift remained suspended from one cable.
The situation created a major emergency and triggered a large-scale rescue effort.
Pakistan Army personnel initially rescued one passenger using a helicopter.
Experts were then brought in to assist with the remaining passengers.
Zipline specialists Ali Swati and Sahib Khan joined the operation.
They worked alongside rescue teams to bring the stranded passengers to safety.
The rescue operation continued for nearly 12 hours.
Eventually, all eight passengers were successfully rescued and brought safely to the ground.
Documentary Gains International Attention
Hanging By A Wire has already attracted international attention.
The documentary has been screened in cinemas in the United Kingdom and the United States.
It has also received attention at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film is now scheduled to be released in Pakistani cinemas later this year.
Its release is expected to bring the Chairlift Rescue story to a wider Pakistani audience.
The documentary also aims to highlight the courage of ordinary people during the emergency.
At the same time, it draws attention to the transport problems faced by communities in remote areas.
The filmmakers hope the story will encourage greater awareness of infrastructure needs.
The documentary presents the rescue as a story of courage, cooperation and survival
