Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has opposed a fine linked to contracting a second Marriage without permission.
The issue was discussed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony. Senator Hafiz Abdul Karim chaired the meeting. Committee chairman Senator Atta-ur-Rehman was unavailable.
CII Chairman Dr Raghib Hussain Naeemi also attended the meeting. He presented the council’s position on proposed amendments to Pakistan’s family laws.
Senate Committee Reviews Family Law Amendment
The committee reviewed the Muslim Family Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Senator Sarmad Ali introduced the private member’s bill in the Senate on January 19, 2026.
The proposed legislation seeks to increase the existing fine related to a second Marriage without permission.
Under the proposal, the fine would rise from Rs5,000 to Rs50,000. The committee discussed the proposed increase and heard views from members and the CII chairman.
Senator Hafiz Abdul Karim Opposes Proposed Fine

Bill Proposes Raising Fine to Rs50,000
