Punjab Makes AI Learning Mandatory in Schools, CM Launches Drive

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has made AI Learning mandatory in all schools across the province, marking a historic step in education reform. She said that digital technology is essential for modern governance and policymaking.

The CM announced that AI Learning will now be compulsory in classrooms, emphasizing that responsible use of artificial intelligence can transform institutions and improve decision-making. This is the first time such a policy has been introduced in Punjab’s education system.

As part of the initiative, the Punjab government has established the Google Tech Valley Digital Transformation Advisory Board. The board will guide the province on digital reforms, the use of advanced technologies, and AI integration across government departments.

For the first time in Pakistan, Punjab ministers received formal AI Learning training. CM Maryam Nawaz personally led a workshop titled “Empowering Punjab with AI” in Lahore, attended by cabinet members. The training covered AI tools like Google Gemini and their role in governance, policymaking, and departmental reforms.

Experts from Google for Education also delivered sessions on AI-powered learning systems and global models for digital transformation. Officials revealed that over 300,000 student IDs have already been created, and 200,000 students along with 2,000 teachers have received training under the Punjab Education Foundation. An additional 3,000 teachers are undergoing master training on the Google for Education platform.

To promote technology-driven journalism, the Punjab government announced 1,000 scholarships for ten organizations, aiming to strengthen responsible digital media. CM Maryam Nawaz stressed that ethical AI use is vital for policymaking, reforms, and improving governance and public services.

Officials say the initiative will create a strong foundation for AI adoption in schools and government, boosting digital skills and preparing students for future careers. Punjab’s move is being hailed as a model for integrating technology into education and governance in Pakistan.
