CM Maryam Nawaz Orders Province-Wide Launch of Sanjhi Sabzi Project

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed deputy commissioners across the province to launch the Sanjhi Sabzi project after the successful implementation of the initiative in Muzaffargarh. The project aims to grow vegetables on government-owned land and distribute them free of cost to deserving families.

The provincial government believes the initiative can improve food security while making better use of vacant public land. Following the Chief Minister’s directive, officials are expected to introduce similar projects in districts across Punjab.

The Sanjhi Sabzi project was first launched in Muzaffargarh under the supervision of the district administration. Seasonal vegetables are being cultivated on government-owned urban buildings, public spaces, and rural land to support low-income households.

According to officials, vegetables are currently being grown on 140 plots covering around 139 kanals of land. The produce is distributed free of charge to families in need as part of a public welfare campaign.

The initiative began in a Christian community village in Muzaffargarh. Residents of the village have also voluntarily joined the project by growing vegetables to help other deserving families in their community.

The Punjab Chief Minister praised the success of the initiative and described it as a model that should be replicated across the province. She instructed all deputy commissioners to identify suitable government land in their respective districts and launch similar welfare projects.

During a meeting with Muzaffargarh Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Usman Tahir Jappa, Maryam Nawaz appreciated his efforts in introducing the project. In recognition of his contribution, she awarded him the Chief Minister Merit Badge along with a cash prize of Rs100,000.

The deputy commissioner briefed the Chief Minister on the progress of the Sanjhi Sabzi initiative. He explained that government-owned land ranging from one marla to one kanal had been identified in villages for vegetable cultivation.

He further informed the Chief Minister that unused land near government buildings was also being utilized for farming. These locations include properties managed by the health, education, forest, and local government departments, as well as assistant commissioners’ offices.

Officials said vacant land in both rural and urban areas is being converted into vegetable farms instead of remaining unused. This approach helps maximize public resources while providing direct benefits to local communities.

The Chief Minister directed authorities to continue expanding the initiative and ensure its long-term sustainability. She emphasized that the project should remain focused on serving deserving families and strengthening community welfare.

The Sanjhi Sabzi project also encourages community participation. Local residents have actively contributed by cultivating vegetables and supporting free distribution efforts, creating a spirit of cooperation and social responsibility.

Government officials believe similar projects across Punjab can improve access to fresh vegetables, reduce food expenses for low-income families, and encourage productive use of public land.
