CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has given officials seven days to improve sanitation services across the province. She directed authorities to ensure sufficient staff and machinery under the Suthra Punjab programme.
The chief minister also ordered action against private sanitation contractors who fail to meet performance standards. She instructed officials to replace underperforming contractors and activate self-operated sanitation services within one week.
CM Punjab Orders Action Against Poor-Performing Contractors
During a special meeting on sanitation arrangements, the chief minister reviewed the performance of sanitation companies across Punjab. The meeting covered waste collection, transportation, workforce availability, machinery and field monitoring systems.
Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to issue warnings to sanitation companies performing below 80 percent in any tehsil. Companies scoring below 50 percent should be removed from their contracts.
She also demanded a comprehensive cleanliness plan for the entire province. Officials must submit a progress report on the Suthra Punjab programme by next week.
The chief minister further ordered the implementation of the Suthra Punjab beat system across Punjab within seven days. The system aims to organise sanitation activities and improve monitoring at the local level.
Focus on Sanitation Workers and Rural Cleanliness
CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz also highlighted the importance of protecting sanitation workers’ rights. She directed officials to ensure that workers receive their outstanding salaries and other pending payments.
She stated that sanitation workers should not suffer because of unpaid liabilities owed by private contractors. The chief minister also called for a legal mechanism to ensure timely salary payments.
Authorities were instructed to recover outstanding dues from companies responsible for the payment delays. This measure aims to protect workers and improve accountability within the sanitation system.
The chief minister also directed officials to maintain cleanliness in rural areas at least every other day. Accumulated garbage must be removed from villages to improve local sanitation conditions.
Weekly Reports and Field Monitoring Ordered
Maryam Nawaz directed authorities to submit detailed weekly reports from every tehsil. These reports must cover available staff, beat-level machinery and field monitoring officers.
The meeting also established accountability for sanitation failures at the local level. Assistant commissioners and Suthra Punjab in-charges in each tehsil will be held responsible for service delivery issues.
According to the meeting, anti-littering squads are operating across every division. These teams have conducted 264,000 visits to raise awareness and issue warnings over sanitation violations.
The chief minister also reviewed cleanliness reports from several tehsils. She commended Chakwal Deputy Commissioner Sarah Hayat and her team for their district’s performance.
Proposed Mobile Application for Suthra Punjab Workers
The meeting also considered a proposal to introduce a dedicated mobile application for Suthra Punjab workers. The application could support communication and monitoring of sanitation activities.
The seven-day deadline places immediate responsibility on officials to improve staffing, machinery and waste management. Authorities are expected to monitor progress and submit regular reports on sanitation services.
