Cold Wave Sweeps Across Pakistan

A severe cold wave has gripped Pakistan, with icy winds and frigid temperatures sweeping across major cities and rural areas alike. Nighttime temperatures are expected to drop to as low as 4°C in some regions, and Karachi is predicted to shiver at a rare low of 6°C in the coming days. The Meteorological Department has reported dense fog and minimal visibility, further intensifying the wintry conditions.

The biting cold has led to a surge in health concerns, with hospitals across Karachi witnessing an influx of patients suffering from seasonal illnesses. Civil Hospital Karachi’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Khalid Bukhari, reported a sharp rise in flu, cold, cough, and chest infection cases, urging residents to take precautions by wearing warm clothing and consuming hot beverages. Similar concerns were echoed by Dr. Abdul Wahid Rajput of the Sindh Infectious Disease Hospital, who highlighted an increase in measles and pneumonia cases.

Rural areas, particularly in Sindh, have also been hit hard by the cold wave, with Khairpur recording a chilling 6°C. Meanwhile, Quetta residents are embracing the cold with seasonal dry fruits, particularly peanuts, which have become a winter staple. Despite the harsh conditions, shopkeepers are experiencing brisk business, as locals prepare to endure the cold with warmth and food.

Up north, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s upper regions are witnessing their first snowfall of the season. Areas like Tirah Valley and Chitral are blanketed in snow, attracting tourists but also disrupting local transportation. Authorities are working to clear snow-blocked routes, as locals face the challenge of subzero temperatures.
