A District and Sessions Court in Malir has ordered an inquiry after a man claimed that two individuals at Karachi Airport stole his mobile phone and transferred about $850,000 from his digital-currency account. The incident has sparked serious concerns about airport security and the protection of digital financial assets in Pakistan.
The case came before the court after the victim filed a petition over the alleged theft and the policeβs failure to register an FIR. The complainant stated that the incident took place on September 30 while he was travelling to Peshawar.
According to the petitioner, two plainclothes men stopped him at the airport and took him to a private room. There, they allegedly seized his mobile phone and accessed his digital-currency account, transferring funds worth USD 850,000.
During the hearing, the police submitted a detailed report and provided a USB containing evidence linked to the case. The petitioner also requested the court to ensure his safety, claiming that the people involved were part of an organized group that had specifically targeted him.
The District and Sessions Court Malir directed the SSP Malir to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The court further instructed that the inquiry be led by an officer of DSP rank to ensure transparency and accountability.
The case has highlighted the growing risks related to digital assets and online financial platforms in Pakistan. It also raises broader questions about how authorities are managing the intersection of digital currency, cybercrime, and physical security at key travel hubs like airports.
With global digital transactions increasing rapidly, experts believe this case underscores the urgent need for tighter cybersecurity measures and improved oversight in Pakistanβs travel and financial sectors.
