An earthquake was felt across several parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and surrounding areas. Residents reported shaking buildings and swaying furniture during the tremors.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale. Tremors were also reported in Swat, Malakand, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, and nearby districts.
In Azad Jammu and Kashmir, residents in Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Leepa Valley felt the shaking strongly. Many people left their homes, some while reciting prayers, fearing the intensity of the tremors.
The Seismological Centre confirmed that the epicentre of the earthquake was located in northern Tajikistan, at a depth of 159 kilometres. Officials stated that the depth helped reduce potential damage in Pakistan. No immediate reports of casualties or structural damage have been received so far.
Earlier, in December 2025, a separate 5.2-magnitude earthquake was recorded in Karachi and surrounding areas. The Seismological Centre reported that the tremors struck at a depth of 12 kilometres, around 12:51am.
Residents across Karachi felt shaking in areas including SITE Area, Saddar, Clifton, DHA Phase 8, and PECHS. People in Shah Faisal Colony, Liaquatabad, and Buffer Zone also reported strong vibrations. Liaquatabad residents described the tremors as particularly alarming.
Authorities emphasized that both earthquakes caused no casualties. Emergency services remain alert in case of further seismic activity. Experts reminded residents that Pakistan lies in a seismically active zone and minor to moderate earthquakes are common.
