Electricity Price Alert: Rs1.42 Increase Hits Households & Businesses

ISLAMABAD โ€“ Pakistanโ€™s power regulator has approved a new increase in Electricity prices for consumers across the country. The decision was made by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority as part of the monthly fuel cost adjustment for February.

According to the regulator, the Electricity price will increase by Rs1.42 per unit. The adjustment will apply to customers of all distribution companies operating in Pakistan.

Officials said the increase will also affect consumers of K-Electric, the main power supplier in Karachi and nearby areas. The revised Electricity charges will appear in April billing statements.

The decision followed a request submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency. The agency initially asked for an increase of Rs1.62 per unit due to higher fuel costs.

However, after reviewing the request, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority approved a slightly lower adjustment. Regulators decided on a Rs1.42 per unit increase instead of the requested amount.

Authorities said the Electricity price revision is part of the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism. This system allows power companies to pass fuel cost changes to consumers.

Fuel adjustment charges are calculated based on the actual cost of generating electricity in a specific month. If fuel prices increase, consumers usually see a higher bill in the following months.

Officials explained that the February fuel costs required a small upward revision in Electricity tariffs. As a result, households and businesses will notice a modest increase in their bills.

The additional amount will be collected through April Electricity bills issued to consumers nationwide. Both residential and commercial users will be affected by the change.

Energy experts say monthly adjustments help maintain financial balance in the power sector. These changes ensure that power producers recover the cost of fuel used to generate electricity.

However, many consumers remain concerned about the cumulative impact of repeated tariff adjustments. Even small increases can raise monthly expenses for households and businesses.

Nepra advised consumers to carefully review their upcoming bills. The regulator also encouraged users to monitor their electricity consumption.

Officials say the adjustment is routine and reflects market-based fuel price changes. Consumers are urged to plan their electricity usage to manage the slight increase in costs.
