Pakistan’s Exports Could Be Impacted by EU-India Trade Deal, Warns Gohar Ejaz

Former federal minister and economic expert Gohar Ejaz has warned that Pakistan’s exports to the European Union could face serious challenges after the EU signed a trade deal with India. The remarks were reported by 24NewsHD on Wednesday.

In a post shared on X, Gohar Ejaz said Pakistan’s $9 billion in exports to the EU last year benefited from zero-tariff access. However, this “honeymoon period” is now over, as the same zero tariffs will apply to India and other regional competitors.

The former minister emphasized that the Pakistani government must take immediate steps to help the textile and manufacturing sectors remain competitive. He highlighted the importance of providing support through energy subsidies, tax relief, and financing options to protect the country’s exports.

Gohar Ejaz warned that systemic inefficiencies in the industry are creating additional pressures. Without prompt action, the $9 billion in EU-bound exports and the employment of approximately 10 million people could be at risk. He urged policymakers to implement measures today to safeguard Pakistan’s economic interests.

The EU-India trade deal is expected to lower barriers for Indian products entering the European market. Analysts say this could challenge Pakistan’s share in key sectors, particularly textiles, which form a significant portion of the country’s exports.

Industry leaders have echoed these concerns, stressing that Pakistan must modernize its production capabilities and reduce costs. Experts say failure to act could reduce the country’s competitiveness, making it harder to maintain current exports levels.

Gohar Ejaz’s warning comes amid growing calls for reforms in trade, energy, and taxation policies. Officials are urged to respond quickly to protect Pakistan’s international market position and ensure the stability of millions of jobs tied to exports.
