Faisalabad, Bahawalpur Scorch in Heatwave as 'Feels-Like' Temperature Crosses 50°C

A severe heatwave is sweeping across various regions of Pakistan, with “feels-like” temperatures soaring past 50°C, intensifying discomfort due to high humidity ahead of the pre-monsoon spell.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department issued health advisories over the weekend as heat indices reached alarming levels in several cities by midday. Bahawalpur recorded the highest heat index at 52.7°C, followed by Sibbi at 52.2°C. Multan reported 52.0°C, while Dera Ismail Khan reached 50.3°C. Faisalabad and Sargodha closely followed with heat indices of 49.8°C.

According to the Met Office, a heat index above 54°C falls under the “Extreme Danger” category, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and exhaustion.

Authorities have urged the public to take strict precautions, including staying indoors during peak heat hours, staying hydrated, and avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure. Outdoor workers, especially those exposed to direct sunlight, have been advised to take regular breaks in shaded or cool environments to prevent health hazards.

As the heatwave is expected to continue in the coming days, emergency and healthcare services have been placed on high alert to handle potential medical emergencies.

Meanwhile, weather experts predict that moist winds from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, coupled with an approaching westerly wave, may bring isolated heavy showers to parts of northern and central Pakistan. Southeastern Sindh may also experience light rain and partially cloudy conditions. Citizens have been advised to remain vigilant as sudden weather shifts are likely.
