Met Office Forecasts Rain Across Pakistan Starting This Weekend

The Met Office has issued a weather alert as forecast rains and snowfall are expected in several northern and western regions of Pakistan. A shallow western disturbance is likely to approach the western parts of the country on the night of December 12.

Under the influence of this system, light to moderate rain-thunderstorms and snowfall over hills are expected from December 13 to 15. Areas likely to be affected include Chitral, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Malakand, Manshera, Abbottabad, Haripur, Bunner, Gilgit-Baltistan (including Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar), and Kashmir (Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli).

Partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with light rain and snowfall are forecast in Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Kurram, Waziristan, Quetta, Ziarat, Zhob, Sherani, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, and Noushki on December 14 and 15. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and the Potohar region may see drizzle, while Murree and Galliyat could experience light rain and snowfall on Sunday and Monday.

Moderate to dense fog is likely to develop over the plains of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and upper Sindh from the night of December 12 until December 16. The Met Office also warned that snowfall may cause slippery roads and possible closures in popular hill stations including Naran, Kaghan, Kalam, Malam Jabba, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, as well as Quetta, Ziarat, and Chaman during the forecast period.

Another western disturbance is expected to influence western and northern regions from December 19, which could bring additional rain and snowfall.

Residents are advised to remain cautious while traveling, particularly in hilly areas, and to follow local weather advisories as forecast rains and snowfall may impact road conditions and visibility. The public is also advised to prepare for potential traffic disruptions caused by slippery or blocked routes.

The Met Officeโ€™s latest report confirms that forecast rains and snowfall are likely to continue affecting northern and western Pakistan intermittently over the next week, urging authorities and citizens to remain alert.
