Geo News has resumed its transmission after serving a 15-day suspension and paying a fine of Rs. 1 crore, following a decision by the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). The channel returned to air after the media regulator issued its final order in a case linked to its Muharram transmission.
The case was related to a special programme titled “Safar-e-Ishq”, which was aired on the 10th of Muharram. According to PEMRA, certain visuals shown during the broadcast violated Pakistan’s electronic media regulations and responsible broadcasting standards.
The regulator conducted a detailed inquiry before reaching its decision. After reviewing the programme, PEMRA concluded that the content did not comply with the country’s broadcasting rules.
The final decision was approved during PEMRA’s 191st meeting, held on July 11, 2026. During the meeting, the authority reviewed recommendations submitted by the Council of Complaints Lahore.
PEMRA also examined the complete record of the proceedings before issuing its final order. The regulator considered written submissions and oral arguments presented by representatives of Geo News during the hearings.
The authority further reviewed the relevant provisions of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002 and the Electronic Media (Programmes and Advertisements) Code of Conduct 2015 before announcing its verdict.
Following the completion of the suspension period and payment of the financial penalty, Geo News was allowed to resume its regular transmission.
The case attracted significant public attention due to the popularity of the news channel and the nature of the regulatory action. It also highlighted the role of PEMRA in monitoring television broadcasts and ensuring compliance with national media laws.
PEMRA stated that electronic media outlets are required to follow the country’s code of conduct while broadcasting news, current affairs, religious programming, and other content. The authority emphasized that all licensed broadcasters are expected to maintain responsible editorial standards.
The regulator said its decision was based on the available evidence, the inquiry findings, and the applicable legal framework. It maintained that compliance with broadcasting regulations is necessary to protect public interest and maintain professional media standards.
The restoration of Geo News marks the end of the suspension imposed after the Muharram transmission. The channel has now resumed normal programming following the completion of all regulatory requirements.
The decision also serves as a reminder to broadcasters about the importance of following the Electronic Media Code of Conduct. PEMRA has repeatedly stated that violations of broadcasting rules may result in penalties, suspensions, or other regulatory action.
