The federal government has decided not to increase the average basic electricity tariff, bringing relief to power consumers across Pakistan. The announcement was made during a review petition hearing at the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
The Additional Secretary of Power informed NEPRA that the government has no plan to raise the electricity tariff at this stage. He said adjustments have been made through subsidies to manage costs. These steps aim to protect consumers from further financial pressure.
During the hearing, officials from the Power Division explained that the national energy mix has changed since July. They said this shift has helped stabilize power generation costs. As a result, there is no immediate need to revise the electricity tariff.
Power Division officials also confirmed that consumers in all categories are currently receiving subsidies. The total subsidy amount stands at Rs62.9 billion. This support is helping offset higher fuel and operational costs in the power sector.
Earlier, the Power Division had filed a review petition against NEPRAโs decision to raise the base electricity tariff. The petition requested reconsideration of the increase. After reviewing the matter, the government chose to maintain the current rates.
The Power Division also approached NEPRA seeking a uniform electricity tariff. This proposal includes state-run distribution companies and K-Electric. Officials argued that a single tariff structure would promote fairness among consumers nationwide.
In a separate development, NEPRA revisited the massive nationwide blackout that occurred four years ago. The regulator officially held the National Grid Company and the Central Power Purchasing Agency responsible for the failure.
NEPRA stated that the blackout happened on January 8, 2021. Large parts of the country remained without electricity for nearly 20 hours. According to the regulator, the responsible agencies failed to restore power within a reasonable time.
The findings highlighted weaknesses in coordination and system management. NEPRA emphasized the need for stronger accountability and improved grid operations to avoid similar incidents.
Experts say stability in the electricity tariff is important for households and businesses. Predictable power costs help manage budgets and support economic planning. The governmentโs decision is expected to offer short-term relief amid rising inflation.
However, analysts note that long-term reforms remain necessary. Improving efficiency, reducing losses, and diversifying energy sources will be key. These steps are essential to ensure a sustainable electricity tariff in the future.
For now, consumers can expect no change in their power bills. The government says it will continue monitoring the situation closely.
