Gul Plaza Fire 81 Missing, DNA Tests Underway to Identify Victims

KARACHI โ€“ Karachi is still reeling after a massive fire engulfed Gul Plaza, a commercial complex, for 34 hours. Authorities have now brought the fire under control, but the building remains dangerously unstable, raising fears of a potential collapse.

Rescue teams, supported by the Army, Rangers, and civil administration, continue risky operations inside Gul Plaza. Engineers are assessing the weakened structure, while heavy machinery is clearing debris to create safer pathways for rescuers.

Families Pray for Missing Loved Ones

The number of missing persons has risen to 81. Families have registered complaints for all missing individuals and are anxiously waiting for updates. DNA collection has started, with 18 samples already submitted by relatives to help identify victims.

Authorities have urged families to coordinate with the DC office helpline for timely information. Rescue teams are entering the building through rear access points while carefully navigating the fragile structure.

Tribute to Fallen Firefighter

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced that Nazimabad Fire Station will be renamed in honor of Shaheed Furqan, the firefighter who lost his life during the operation. He also promised support for Furqanโ€™s widow and children, including education and employment assistance.

During a visit to the bereaved family, Mayor Wahab assured them that the city would stand by them. Furqanโ€™s relatives described him as a loving father, brother, and son, and requested that his widow retain her government-allotted residence.

Safety Concerns Emerge

Survivors revealed alarming details about Gul Plazaโ€™s safety standards. Out of 26 gates, 24 were locked after 10 pm, leaving only two escape routes. Thick smoke and darkness made evacuation extremely difficult.

Tensions flared when families blocked a crane from removing debris, demanding that authorities recover bodies first. Sindh Rangers intervened to allow rescue operations to continue safely.

Authorities confirmed that 69 people remain missing, with 32 last seen inside Gul Plaza. The surrounding areas, including Rampa Plaza, are secured, and only rescue personnel are allowed inside.

A committee has been formed to assess financial losses for affected traders. The Sindh Chief Minister has also set up a team to support those impacted by the disaster.
