Gul Plaza Fire Investigation: 39 Victims Identified, CM Sindh Presented With Report

Karachi authorities continue to investigate the devastating Gul Plaza fire that erupted on January 17. The blaze lasted over 32 hours and left the commercial hub severely damaged. At least 74 people have died, while dozens remain missing.

Officials have recovered 21 unidentified bodies from the site. DNA profiling has helped identify 16 of them so far. The Sindh Forensic Lab confirmed the identities of 12 additional victims using a โ€œproof of presenceโ€ method. Families of the deceased have been asked to submit DNA samples for final confirmation.

Authorities have begun compiling a probe report to determine the causes and negligence behind the incident. SSP Arif Aziz confirmed that statements from six on-duty security guards, watchmen, and other staff have been recorded. Investigators are also analysing digital video recorders recovered from the debris to reconstruct the fireโ€™s timeline.

Preliminary findings reveal that 24 of the buildingโ€™s 26 gates were locked during the fire. Only two exits were open, which severely hindered evacuation. Authorities noted overcrowding and unauthorized shop construction inside Gul Plaza, obstructing emergency access. The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) will decide whether to demolish or stabilize the structure based on technical assessments.

The ongoing probe report aims to identify lapses by management, staff, and safety authorities. Questions focus on closed doors, inaccessible emergency exits, and the delayed response of firefighting teams. Authorities emphasised that accountability will follow once the investigation concludes.

Rescue teams, supported by the Army, Rangers, and Frontier Works Organisation, have cleared debris and are ensuring no individuals remain trapped. Mayor Murtaza Wahab and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah have announced compensation of Rs10 million for families of the victims.

Officials confirmed that the final probe report will be shared publicly once completed. Families of the missing are urged to cooperate with authorities and submit DNA samples. Meanwhile, Gul Plaza remains sealed as the investigation continues to uncover the full chain of responsibility behind this tragedy.
